Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival |
|
|
In the Silverthorne Pavillion |
In absolute terms, the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival is one of the best music festivals in America. If you haven't
yet attended this festival you are missing an extraordinary musical experience. Artistic Director Bil Jackson,
principal clarinet with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, is regarded as one of the finest clarinetists in America.
His co-Artistic Director Steven Copes, concertmaster of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, is one of America's most
highly regarded violinists. Together, they have invited among the very best internationally acclaimed solo and
chamber music players to participate in the The Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival. Bil and Steve co-founded The Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival in 1998. As a late season festival, the Alpenglow Players are performing when the larger festivals have completed their seasons. After normal growing pains, the Festival finally found a real home in 2001 in the wonderfully acoustic Silverthorne Pavilion. This beautiful all wood facility is the perfect size for chamber music concerts, and provides excellent acoustics for live music. The 2001 and 2002 performances were a real tribute to the Pavilion, the Town of Silverthorne, and to Summit County. This year we held our first annual winter concert at the Pavilion, in addition to an evening soiree. We are privileged to now have the Alpenglow Players here summer and winter! |
| The principal goal of the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival is to perform the great masterworks of the chamber music repertoire at the highest level. A second major goal is to bring this great music to young people and to the under-served populations in the community. During the weeklong period of the summer Festival beginning on August 17th, the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival presents a series of two full concerts, a free community/family concert, two private home benefit soirees, a fund raiser for the Alpenglow Music Scholarship and open rehearsals. The Summit Foundation funds the free community/family concert. This concert is lighter than the other concerts and is specifically designed for family enjoyment with interaction between the musicians and their audience. The heart of the Festival is a series of paid concerts, in which the artists make their strongest musical statements and fully demonstrate their exceptional talent. In 2001, the artistic directors commissioned composer Dan Coleman who has received many prestigious awards for his compositions. The Alpenglow Players premiered this commissioned work, and we were the first in the world to hear it. Dan will return this year with a newly commissioned work, "Elements" 2003. Last year with the proceeds of our opening concert we established the first Summit County music scholarship for a graduating high school senior: The Alpenglow Music Scholarship. |

The Alpenglow Festival is a cultural jewel, and keeping it polished and available requires the support of music
lovers throughout the county and state. None of this happens in a vacuum! A hard working Board of Directors governs
the Festival on an entirely volunteer basis. In addition, the Alpenglow Guild supplies much needed volunteer support.
An important goal of the Board is to generate sufficient financial support to add additional musicians, thus allowing
us to grow and increase the repertoire of chamber music available for performances. This goal is ambitious and
requires substantial community support. With the goal of increasing the number of musicians in future years, our
fundraising goal for 2003 exceeds $50,000. |
